What to expect after an extraction

Oral Surgery Post Operative Instructions:

 

Today

Rest and take it easy
Apply an ice pack to the outside of the face adjacent to the wound (5 minutes on and 5 minutes off for 1-2 hours)
NO hot drinks or hot face packs

NO rinsing or swishing your mouth out today

NO smoking or consuming alcohol

 

FOR PAIN

 

2 panadeine and 2 nurofen 200mg every 3-4 hours if required. After 48 hours if pain increases you may have a "dry socket". Please call us if this happens.

 

FOR BLEEDING

 

Apply firm continuous pressure for at least 20 minutes to wound by biting on clean rolled handkerchief or gauze but NOT cotton wool.

 

TOMORROW

 

Hot salt mouthwashes as frequently as possible (especially after meals) for 5-7 days.
Brush and floss as much as possible

 

EXPECT

 

Some oozing of blood and staining of saliva (cover your pillow with a towel)
Numbness for 2-3 hours (or 4-5 if long acting anaesthetic used).
Some swelling and stiffness a day or two afterwards.
