Headaches, Migraines and Temporomandibular Disorders(TMD)
The main presenting complaint for dental related headaches, migraines and temporomandibular disorders are usually pain in the head, neck or face. This is often (but not always) accompanied by jaw joint noises, altered jaw movements, damage to teeth and joint, and posture compromises and can be helped with dental migraine treatment.
The resulting consequence of maladaptive forces in and around the
dentoskeletal region can conspire on the neurology of the region to create
muscle tension and adaptive behaviors. This can drive the muscles to create
a cycle of problems permanently and painfully affecting the teeth, jaw
bones, jaw joint, ligaments, and associated structures in the head and neck.
Treatment is usually multi-disciplinary involving dentistry, chiropractic, physical
therapy, and massage therapy.
The ultimate dental goal is to manage and lower the proprioceptive and
neuromuscular input on the trigeminal system by 1)- achieving a control or
balance of the bite/occlusion, and 2)- by preserving or restoring health and
stability to the TM joint and associated structures and tissues.
The dental treatment usually involves the
use of oral appliances or orthotics, treatment splints, orthodontics,
restorative reconstructions, prosthodontics, maxillomandibular surgery, and infrequently surgery on the joint itself.
