Christine Duxbury and Grahame Dutton - Dentist & Owners - Duxton Dental, Christchurch

We hope you and your families are all well and are coping with lockdown. For those of you who are essential workers, thank you for keeping us all safe, fed and comfortable in our bubbles.

We thought we’d touch base so that you all had an idea about what Covid-19 means for your ongoing dental care. It is an evolving situation and we can only look to guidance from our governing bodies, the NZ Dental Council and the NZ Dental Association and we think that heading into Level 3 we’ll be given more specific guidelines in the days to come.

Please see below for some oral hygiene tips.

  • General Information

The back story is that dentistry is a high risk situation for transmission of viruses because of the aerosols generated during treatment. So this is why, during Level 4, the CDHB has a service to triage all dental emergencies in Canterbury and to have only true emergencies of severe pain, trauma and facial swelling dealt with by a small group of well resourced dentists with full PPE and stringent infection control.

Please remember that our team are more than happy to be available for free phone or email advice during lockdown. Either leave a message at ph 033485488 or email info@duxtondental.co.nz

In preparation for returning to Duxton Dental our clinical team is currently enrolled in an online course updating all our infection prevention procedures. All triaged “at risk” clients are likely to remain to be seen by the CDHB.

  • A Remote Consultation Offer to our Clients During Lockdown

We just wanted to reach out during these challenging times to let you know that Duxton Dental is still here to help, we're not going anywhere. We will still be available via email and phone should you need anything. And if you’re in any sort of pain, we’ll do our best to get you assessed and back on track quickly.

With the new social distancing rules in place, outside of emergencies, we have decided to go virtual like most of the world.

We would like to offer you a free virtual dental or orthodontic consult, for example on a phone or video call with a Duxton dentist.

Anything you want to discuss with us about your dental health, concerns you have, or perhaps even to learn more about your options for straightening or whitening your teeth to show off that new smile when things get back to normal.

If you are interested please email info@duxtondental.co.nz and we will look forward to speaking to you soon on your virtual video or phone consult.

Until then, stay safe and keeping washing your hands.

  • Level 2 at Duxton Dental

We are awaiting confirmation but we anticipate the following dental appointments will be business as usual but with low/no aerosol generated

    • Dental checkups and consultations
    • Orthodontic and Invisalign appointments
    • Hygienist appointments
    • Simple dental procedures for emergencies and relief of pain
    • Tooth extractions
    • Jaw consultations for grinding, headaches and TMD
    • Botox/Dysport consultations for treatment of bruxism, headaches and cosmetics

For emergency procedures that do require aerosol we have full PPE, extra time allowed, high speed suction and other infection control aids. So please be confident that we have everyone’s best interests at heart.

The NZ Dental Council advises deferring all dentistry until Level 1 for people over 70 years old and people with high risk medical conditions.

  • Level 3 at Duxton Dental

At Covid Level 3 we are permitted to see patients for emergency dental treatment only with special precautions in place for infection prevention and control.

Please leave a phone message and you will be triaged and assessed for suitability.

The CDHB will have provision for those high risk people not suitable to be seen in general practice.

  • Practical Information Regarding Appointments:

1/ If you had an appointment booked during lockdown,

Our very efficient front office team will be in touch with you once we have firm dates available to reschedule.

2/ If you had emergency contact with us during lockdown

We will be in contact asap to schedule an appointment or to touch base about your issues, once we get the all clear from the NZ Dental Association.

3/ If you have an upcoming appointment.

At Level 2 presume your appointment is going ahead as usual, although we are likely to contact you personally. You will get reminders as usual but please call directly if you cannot attend or if you have any queries about your appointment. We understand some people’s situations have changed.

  • What Differences Should You Anticipate with Your Appointment?

    On arrival

    - You may be asked to wait in your car until we have your clinic ready for you so less time is spent in the waiting room.

    - You may be put through a triage set of questions and your temperature taken. Please bring your own pen if possible.

    - You will be asked to hand sanitise on arrival and to use an antiseptic mouthwash in the clinic.

    During your appointment

    - These appointments might be longer because of buffer times between appointments for increased infection control processes and for increased time when we substitute non aerosol generating methods.

    - Clinical staff might be in full PPE or regular infection control gowns depending on your treatment.

    After your appointment

    - The Eftpos machine is routinely wiped down between clients.

    - Please hand sanitise before leaving Duxton Dental, for your own protection.

We look forward to seeing your smiling faces again. Please see below for a message from Corinne, one of our wonderful Hygienists about home care to ensure a healthy mouth.

  • A Message From our Hygienist About Home Care

Hi everyone, these enforced holidays made me realise how much I love my job and miss my lovely patients!

In these testing times it is easy to forget about seemingly trivial things, like brushing your teeth, but now is an important time to look after our health. We want to stay mentally and physically well and the last thing we need is additional problems.

You might remember that oral health has a major influence on overall health, especially the immune system. We all know how important good and sensible nutrition is- low in sugar with lots of vegetable and fruit to get the important vitamins, but equally important, we want to make sure to clean the teeth well.

Bacteria in plaque can cause inflammation of the gums and this, like any inflammation, triggers an immune system response. We need an immune system that is not weakened already by being busy fighting bacterial infection of the gums. Achieving and maintaining healthy gums requires an investment of just 5 minutes a day on your part. As well as brushing twice a day one must include cleaning between the teeth. For beginners that can feel a bit awkward but it will become really easy if you hang on in there! It will keep your gums and underlying bone in good shape and do wonders to prevent cavities! Any bits and pieces you might miss we can remove at your next hygiene maintenance! Me, and the team at Duxton Dental, look ever so forward to welcoming you again!
