LET'S GET THINGS STRAIGHT

The aim of orthodontics is to produce a healthy, functional bite, creating greater resistance to disease and improving personal appearance. This contributes to mental and physical well-being. Straight white teeth have also been shown to help you in life.

Most orthodontics is performed during the adolescent growth spurt and take advantage of facial growth, however these days we also treat many adults and younger children that have more pressing issues.

At Duxton Dental we look at your present complaint or you may have been referred by the school dental service.

We recommend having an orthodontic examination at any age, however as young as 7 – 9 years of age if things aren’t right, like missing adult teeth, or an under or overbite. Identifying issues early, can in some cases save the need for treatment later on. It can also help with self-esteem when children go through their most vulnerable time with respect to self-image.

Types of Orthodontic Treatments Available

Teeth are moved by placing a light force on the teeth. This can be achieved by using braces and wires, plates, appliances or clear aligners (Invisalign).

01

Invisalign

Invisalign clear aligners are the clear alternative to traditional braces. Instil confidence and a great smile!

02

Braces

These can be metal or ceramic with the latter being a lot less noticeable as they are tooth-coloured.

03

Removable Plates

Active plates can align your teeth or expand your jaws. Other plates can be used as retainers after treatment.

04

Cemented Appliances

Sometimes a cemented appliance is more appropriate for cooperation or to change a habit like thumb-sucking.

Orthodontic Records

If treatment is warranted, we take a series of records to confirm our initial findings. These include: Models of a 3d image, a jaw scan, photographic series and an X-ray of the face. A cephalometric x-ray is often required to decide if the changes in the mouth are simply a tooth issue or whether there are underlying skeletal changes (facial bones).

Once a diagnosis has been made a treatment plan is devised which includes the type of appliances needed, the estimate of treatment time and costs involved.
